The European Commission releases its proposal for a Directive to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment

On 28 May, the European Commission released its proposal for a Directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment that will now go through the usual ordinary legislative procedure and be submitted to the European Parliament and Council for discussion. UNESDA acknowledges this proposal and reiterates the fact that its members have been instrumental in setting up and running many of the packaging recovery organisations in place across EU Member States. Indeed, we are proud to have been able to play our role in contributing to Europe’s already significant PET recycling rates (70-90% in the best performing countries).

The European soft drinks industry uses a variety of packaging formats including glass, PET bottles, and aluminium and steel cans and we want to contribute actively to making not just plastic bottles but all beverage packaging more sustainable. We also want more packaging collected and recycled and not discarded or left to blight our environment.
